Jeff Sigurdson, 2025
Cedar / Indian Rosewood
This brand-new 2025 guitar by Canadian luthier Jeff Sigurdson (No. 624) is a powerful, overtone-rich cedar doubletop that combines extraordinary volume, warmth, and clarity with exceptional ease of play. Built to my custom specifications, it features a 640mm scale length with a standard 52.5mm nut, creating an instrument that feels compact and effortless without sacrificing projection or tonal depth.
The cedar/balsa doubletop produces a vast, colorful sound that balances brightness and darkness perfectly—lush, blooming trebles with a “bulbous” quality, deep woody basses that throb with resonance, and a sustain that encourages you to slow down and savor every phrase. The overtone content is remarkable, recalling the sonic bloom and sustain of Antonius Müller’s cedar doubletops, but with its own distinctive warmth and openness.
Visually, the guitar is equally elegant. It features a natural spalted-wood rosette, a comfortable armrest, raised fingerboard, and magnetic soundport cover—a thoughtful detail that’s secure enough to leave in place while cased. The Gotoh Premium tuners are smooth and precise, and the action setup is flawless at around 3.5mm on the bass side and 2.75mm on the treble at the 12th fret.
The Indian rosewood back and sides are beautifully matched, with rich reddish hues and subtle figure, demonstrating Jeff’s characteristic attention to wood selection and symmetry.
About the Maker
Jeff Sigurdson has been building fine handmade guitars in British Columbia, Canada, since the mid-1980s. His journey began out of necessity—building his own instruments when he couldn’t afford to buy one—and soon evolved into a lifelong pursuit of craftsmanship and tone.
After completing a two-year course at Douglas College focused on traditional Spanish guitar-making, Jeff studied with Michael Dunn, whose lineage traces back to Casa Ferrer of Granada (est. 1875). He later worked for Jean Larrivée Guitars from 1992 to 2000, where he refined his structural precision and absorbed the heritage of Edgar Mönch and Marcelo Barbero, connecting him to two of the most influential lineages in the Spanish guitar tradition.
Jeff’s instruments are known for their exceptional responsiveness, clarity, and refined French-polished finishes, achieved using hot hide glue throughout construction. Over several decades, he has built hundreds of guitars spanning classical, flamenco, and steel-string designs—each reflecting a balance of tradition, innovation, and musicality that continues to evolve with every new creation.
