Michael Fontenot No. 21 – 2025 Cedar/Nomex Double Top, Indian Rosewood, 640mm

This 2025 guitar by Michael Fontenot, his 21st instrument, is a strikingly refined double top from a rising luthier based in Fredericksburg, Texas. Known for his curiosity and careful attention to player feedback, Fontenot has developed a modern classical guitar that surprises with its depth, sensitivity, and effortless playability.

After following his work closely over the past few years, this guitar (along with No. 19) marks a clear step forward in sound, feel, and aesthetic detail. It’s light, responsive, and deeply resonant—qualities not easily found together in newer makers' instruments.

  • Top: Cedar/Nomex Double Top

  • Back & Sides: Indian Rosewood with wheat-style purfling

  • Armrest: Sculpted and elegantly integrated

  • Tuners: Sloan with Snakewood buttons

Sound & Playability

This guitar is remarkably touch-sensitive with a quick response and impressive power for such a lightweight build. Despite its smaller scale, the sound is anything but small. The air resonance sits low—between E♭ and E—giving the instrument a rich, dark body to complement its clarity.

The trebles sing with pure lyrical tone, even when using nylon strings across all registers. Sustain is excellent, and dynamics feel natural and expressive. It shines in intimate, lyrical playing but has the headroom for fuller textures without losing refinement.

The slim neck and 640mm scale make this one of the easiest-playing guitars currently in the collection, ideal for players who value comfort and agility.

Final Thoughts

Michael Fontenot’s No. 21 is a breakthrough guitar that offers sophisticated tonal depth and playability in a compact, elegant build. It’s an exciting sign of things to come from this talented Texas-based maker.
