Few names in classical guitar making command as much respect as Hernández y Aguado, the legendary Madrid-based duo widely regarded as one of the finest partnerships in Spanish guitar history. Their instruments are coveted by collectors, performers, and aficionados alike, with an unmistakable sound and aesthetic that places them firmly among the greats.
Both Julian Bream and John Williams owned and recorded extensively on Hernández y Aguado guitars. Their famous Julian and John album was recorded on a 1965 example, just one year newer than this guitar, and Bream also recorded his celebrated 70s album on a 1965 Hernández y Aguado, cementing the duo’s place in recording history.
This 1964 example showcases all the hallmarks that have made their instruments so revered: refined craftsmanship, bold yet lyrical tone, and the unmistakable Spanish character that only the finest Madrid guitars possess.

The balance between registers is remarkable, and the guitar possesses the rich, rounded fundamental typical of their finest work. Compared to many Spanish guitars of the time, Hernández y Aguado instruments exhibit exceptional clarity and sustain while still retaining warmth and color.
This example feels lively, responsive, and exceptionally refined under the hands, with plenty of headroom for dynamic playing.
