Hermann Hauser II, 1973

Spruce / CSA Rosewood

Built in 1973, this Hermann Hauser II is a stunning and exceptionally well-preserved example of his late-period work. It represents the absolute height of his postwar craftsmanship — an instrument that combines clarity, depth, and lyricism in a way few guitars ever have. If you could only play one guitar for the rest of your life, this would easily be the one.

The spruce top has aged to a warm golden hue, developing a rich patina that only 50 years of careful preservation can create. Beneath the bridge are a few light nail marks typical of a played yet well-cared-for instrument. The finish is still intact and glowing. The Brazilian rosewood back and sides are of beautiful quality with gentle color variation from age.

Tone & Character

The sound is instantly captivating.
It’s clear, pure, and focused, yet it carries remarkable depth and sustain— qualities that define the best Hauser II guitars. The basses have an almost orchestral roundness, while the trebles sing with purity and power. It’s not a “loud” guitar in the modern double-top sense, but in front of a listener it feels strong, projecting, and emotionally direct. The balance between warmth and articulation is exquisite.

As you play, the instrument seems to breathe back at you. Each note feels supported by a deep internal resonance that gives the impression of both intimacy and authority — the unmistakable Hauser voice.

Aesthetic Details

This guitar features Hauser’s classic headstock with original Landstorfer tuners, elegant green purfling lines, and a rosette so intricate that it seems illuminated from within. The delicate green tones shimmer in the light, a hallmark of Hauser II’s later aesthetic. The V-joint neck construction and overall detailing showcase his refined precision and restraint.

One charming historical feature is the orange-hued tie block insert material — a plastic composite that Hauser II originally intended to remain white, which naturally aged to a warm amber tone over decades. The current saddle and nut have been replaced for playability, but the guitar retains its authentic aesthetic through and through.
