Dominique Field, 2001

$26,000.00

Spruce / Madagascar Rosewood

Overview

This 2001 Dominique Field is a special guitar by any standard, and one that immediately stood out to me upon first contact. Built during what many players consider to be one of Field’s most exceptional periods, it represents a rare and compelling voice within the French tradition.

Dominique Field, along with Daniel Friederich are both widely regarded as part of the lineage descending from Robert Bouchet, and this guitar reflects that shared heritage while maintaining a personality that is unmistakably its own. It is refined, deeply musical, and remarkably inspiring to play.

From the first notes, this instrument communicates clarity, immediacy, and color in a way that feels both effortless and deeply expressive.

Sound & Character

The sound of this guitar is what truly defines it. The trebles are exceptionally pure and responsive, with an immediate attack and a clarity that allows each note to exist distinctly on its own. There is shimmer and sparkle, but never excess overtone clutter. The result is a sound that feels focused, elegant, and alive.

What surprised me most is the bass response. Despite being a spruce-topped guitar, the basses are broad, rich, and almost cedar-like in their depth and weight. They sound large and generous without sacrificing definition, creating a balance that feels both powerful and refined.

Color control is effortless. Bright sounds never become brittle or harsh, and darker colors remain full and resonant. This is an instrument that responds instantly to intention, allowing you to shape phrases and voices with ease. It is the kind of guitar that actively invites exploration and creativity.

Playability

The guitar is extremely responsive under the hands, with a fast, clean attack that rewards even the lightest touch. Dynamic range is wide, articulation is precise, and the instrument feels comfortable and intuitive across the fingerboard. It encourages musical risk-taking and nuanced expression, making it equally compelling for lyrical playing and more assertive passages.

Condition

Overall condition is remarkably strong for a guitar of this age. There are two repaired cracks, both addressed many years ago by Yuris Zeltins, a highly respected luthier and restorer known for his work on important historical classical guitars (read about the story of Pepe Romero and his "La Wonderful". These repairs are stable and professionally executed.

Aside from this, the guitar is in beautifully preserved condition, with very minimal cosmetic wear and no significant issues to note. It has clearly been well cared for throughout its life.

Final Thoughts

This is a guitar that makes an immediate emotional impression. It combines purity, richness, and flexibility in a way that feels rare even among high-level concert instruments. Whether you are drawn to the French tradition or simply searching for a deeply musical and inspiring guitar, this 2001 Dominique Field deserves serious consideration.
