The first guitar Dieter Müller has built exclusively for GuitarCollection.com; the brief was simple, and the result is anything but. We asked for a doubletop that is very loud, very colorful, and immediately responsive, with a low, comfortable action and, above all, evenness of sustain across the whole fingerboard. On paper that reads like a wish list. In practice, evenness is exactly where the loudest and most responsive doubletops in the world tend to fall short, and it is exactly where Müller's latest instruments excel. This 2026 cedar doubletop delivers on every point of the brief.

It wears a dark, chocolate-toned cedar top over a set of Indian rosewood so richly figured it could pass for Madagascar at a glance, and it is fitted with Barnett tuning machines, the finest available. The main air resonance sits at E flat, which gives the guitar a rich, deep, vast quality of sound that recalls Santos Hernández, Torres, and, of course, the father of the doubletop, Matthias Dammann.

Müller's guitars are not for the faint of heart. They are sensitive, responsive instruments that reveal everything in the playing, good and bad alike. Harness that power and the reward is tenfold: this is among the most colorful and dynamic instruments we have had the opportunity to know in recent years. For a player who wants an instrument that tells the truth and opens up a vast range of colors and textures, this is the one.

There is a reason so many fine players perform and record on Müller's guitars. Kerim Altınörs and Ayşegül Koca play his instruments, Duo Denicia recorded on them, and Qianhao Li took first prize at the Madrid International Guitar Competition on a Müller doubletop (hear him in some beautiful Scarlatti). Best known of all is GFA winner and University of North Texas professor Bokyung Byun, whose concert instrument is a Dieter Müller.

A brand new Dieter Müller rarely comes to market. This one is, in our opinion, simply outstanding.

Sound

Loud is the first word, but it is not the important one. Plenty of doubletops are loud. What sets this guitar apart is that the volume arrives with color, and the color arrives evenly. Every note on the fingerboard carries the same weight and the same length of sustain, so a melody climbing into the upper positions does not thin out, and a bass line does not suddenly overwhelm what sits above it. That evenness is the hardest thing to achieve in an instrument this responsive, and it is the quality that lets a player stop managing the guitar and simply play.

The E flat air resonance is a large part of the character. It lowers the center of gravity of the whole instrument, so the basses are deep and vast rather than merely big, the middle register is thick and vocal, and the trebles sit on a bed of warmth instead of floating above it. The chocolate cedar top adds darkness and density to the fundamental, and the rosewood back and sides give the sound its long, complex tail of overtones.

Then there is the palette. Move the right hand a centimeter toward the bridge and the guitar turns bright and glassy; move it over the soundhole and it turns velvety and dark; play with the flesh and it whispers, play with the nail and it snaps. Very few instruments offer this much contrast between colors while keeping the fundamental so strong at every point along the way. It is a guitar that shows the player the truth about their tone, and then gives them an enormous range in which to explore it.

Playability

The action was one of the specific requests for this guitar, and Müller delivered: 3.5 mm on the bass side and 2.75 mm on the treble side at the 12th fret, low, clean, and completely buzz-free with real headroom for a strong attack. Combined with the 650 mm scale, 52 mm nut, and raised fingerboard, the guitar feels fast and effortless in the left hand and comfortable over long sessions.

Response is immediate. The top moves at the lightest touch, and dynamics scale smoothly from a whisper to a full fortissimo without the sound ever compressing or breaking up. This is a guitar that rewards a refined, sensitive touch and gives back exactly what is put into it.

The top is a cedar and Nomex doubletop, the construction Müller has refined over decades, chosen here for its unusually dark, chocolate-toned color. The back and sides are a striking set of Indian rosewood with deep, streaked figure and a bookmatched center strip, closer in appearance to Madagascar rosewood than to typical Indian stock. The fingerboard is raised above the soundboard for clean access to the upper positions. The whole instrument weighs 1,500 grams on the dot, light for a guitar with this much power.

Müller's design has evolved in the past few years, and this guitar shows the current form of it. The rosette is his newest pattern, an intricate mosaic ring framed in red and black, and a marked step up in refinement from his earlier work. The headstock has moved to a Manuel Ramírez inspired outline, a nod to tradition that suits the instrument's voice. The bridge carries a mosaic tie block with bone accents. Tuning machines are Barnett with ebony buttons.

Then there is the finish. The entire guitar is French polished, and the polish is flawless: no ripples, no dull patches, no build-up in the corners of the bridge or the edges of the rosette, just a thin, glassy, perfectly level shellac that lets the figure of the rosewood and the color of the cedar show through untouched. French polish this clean is difficult, slow, and unforgiving work, and it is usually where even very good guitars show a small compromise somewhere. There is none here. Down to the smallest detail, it is the work of a master at the height of his craft.
