Carsten Kobs Ex. David Russell, 2019

Cedar / CSA Rosewood

Built by renowned German luthier Carsten Kobs, this 2019 cedar double top represents one of the finest examples of contemporary classical guitar making—made even more special by its provenance as a former instrument of legendary guitarist David Russell. Kobs is widely regarded as one of the most consistent and refined voices in the double top tradition, and this guitar showcases his signature aesthetic, balance, and sonic power in full.

David Russell selected this guitar personally and later used it extensively as a practice instrument, particularly during the pandemic period. He eventually exchanged it for a newer Kobs guitar that Evan had the privilege of trying at Carsten’s Hamburg workshop, underscoring the high level of consistency in Kobs's instruments over the years.

Sound & Playability

This guitar sits at the unique intersection of two tonal extremes: it offers the control and clarity of a guitar with strong fundamentals, while still presenting rich overtones and sympathetic vibrations that make every note sing. Kobs manages to deliver a tone with incredible purity and sustain, but without sacrificing character or responsiveness. The balance across registers is exceptional, and the voice is unmistakably refined yet powerful.

Playability is another standout feature. This guitar was set up to David Russell's preferences and features one of the lowest actions we’ve ever encountered—approximately 3mm on the 6th string and 2.5mm on the 1st at the 12th fret—yet surprisingly avoids unwanted buzzing. It’s effortless to play, and ideal for players who value both sensitivity and projection.

Visually, the Brazilian rosewood used here is breathtaking—with deep reds and rich figuring that shift with the light. Combined with a detailed cedar top, Kobs's understated yet precise rosette, and Klaus Scheller tuners, the instrument is a work of art from every angle.

Condition

Excellent. Light signs of use typical of a concert instrument, but overall very clean and well-maintained.

Final Thoughts

This is a rare and meaningful opportunity to acquire a guitar with elite pedigree, concert-ready performance, and proven consistency. For those who admire the craftsmanship of Carsten Kobs or the artistry of David Russell, this 2019 guitar offers both historical and musical value.
