This 2016 Antonius Müller is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the world’s most sought-after double tops, built by a German master whose waiting list now exceeds ten years. This instrument carries exceptional provenance as the longtime concert guitar of Adam Holzman, one of the foremost American virtuosos and pedagogues. Holzman performed extensively on this guitar, and it will be accompanied by a signed letter from him detailing its history and use.
Müller’s guitars are legendary for their effortless legato, deep sustain, and refined tonal palette—qualities that have made them the choice of players such as Sharon Isbin, Álvaro Pierri, Aniello Desiderio, Zoran Dukić, Dale Kavanagh, Hao Yang, Francisco Luis, and many others. This guitar exemplifies all of those qualities, with the added advantage of years of professional concert play that have opened the sound in remarkable ways.
Year: 2016 (No. 5 of that year)
Top: Cedar double top with balsa core
Neck: Raised fingerboard for comfortable upper-fret access
Tuners: Gotoh standard tuners
Condition: Honest play wear from extensive concert use, including surface marks, a repaired dent in the top beneath the rosette, string ding, and polish wear on the top. Back and sides in very good condition, with darkening to the polish on the back. Neck and structural integrity are excellent.
This guitar’s voice is regal, powerful, and unusually sustaining—even by Müller standards. The trebles have a rare brilliance and clarity, while the basses remain full, round, and balanced. Sustain is astonishing: notes bloom and hang in the air like a bowed instrument, giving the player incredible expressive freedom.
Legato playing is nearly effortless, and vibrato is enriched by the natural resonance of the instrument rather than needed to prolong the sound. The guitar responds evenly across the entire register, with no dead zones and an unusually high percentage of “sweet spots” on the fingerboard.
Holzman’s years of professional concert use have given the instrument a maturity of tone that feels both powerful and intimate—a hallmark of the very best Müller guitars.
