Overview

This exceptional 1998 Coclea model by Andrea Tacchi represents one of the great voices of modern Italian guitar making. This is the first cedar topped Tacchi I have had in my studio, and it made an immediate impression. From the first notes, there is a remarkable thickness and density to the sound that is both profound and deeply musical. Built as Tacchi’s 217th guitar, this Coclea comes from a mature period of his work and fully reflects why his instruments are chosen by some of the most sensitive and discerning players in the world.

Andrea Tacchi is widely regarded as the most influential Italian luthier of his generation. His guitars are rare, meticulously crafted, and unmistakable in both sound and aesthetic. This Coclea model is a traditional build, not a double top or lattice braced instrument, yet it incorporates refined modern features such as a raised fingerboard for effortless upper register access. The cedar top has aged beautifully, developing a warm, dark glow with only minimal cosmetic marks from careful use over time.

Visually, the guitar is stunning. The dark, restrained rosette is one of Tacchi’s most elegant designs, echoed subtly in the wooden tie block motif. Inside, the signed label, date, serial number, and the small stamped “Andrea” along the center seam speak to the pride and care taken in every detail of the build.

Key Features

  • Top: Cedar, beautifully aged

  • Finish: Original finish with light, non structural finish checking on the sides

Sound and Playability

This guitar is all about color, sustain, and depth. There is a remarkable thickness to every note, especially evident on the second and fifth strings, where the sound blooms with richness and complexity. The trebles are silky and expressive, while the basses are dark, warm, and sustaining, with a powerful but refined presence.

The Coclea is an inviting and forgiving instrument that encourages expressive playing. It responds beautifully to variations in right hand color, brightening and clarifying when pushed, yet remaining lush and generous at softer dynamics. Despite its substantial, confidence inspiring feel, the guitar is extremely comfortable to play, with low action, tall frets, and a neck that leans slightly fuller without ever feeling cumbersome.
