Andrea Tacchi is the most celebrated Italian luthier of the modern era, and his Coclea Thucea is widely regarded as his flagship model. Inspired by the final guitar of Antonio de Torres, which was constructed using four different pieces of spruce with varying densities, Tacchi reimagined this concept by pairing a central strip of spruce with outer panels of cedar. The result is a soundboard with remarkable power, balance, and sensitivity.
This 2010 example (No. 343) showcases not only Tacchi’s artistic vision but also his meticulous craftsmanship, blending modern refinements with traditional inspiration to produce one of the most compelling voices in contemporary guitar making.
Top: Spruce center flanked by two pieces of cedar
Back and Sides: Indian Rosewood (even though it looks like Wenge!)
Neck: Slim D-shaped profile, very comfortable with a low action (approx. 3.5 mm bass and 2.75 mm treble)
Bracing: Sparse, innovative design with light fan and X elements
Fingerboard: Raised design for easier access to upper positions
Rosette: Classic Tacchi mosaic with wheat motif in understated tones
Condition: Excellent, with a small crack in the top repaired many years ago
The Coclea Thucea is one of the most extraordinary guitars you will encounter. While not a double top or lattice braced guitar, it achieves a level of volume and projection that rivals the most modern instruments, yet retains an organic and natural voice.
Power and Projection: Immense sustain and resonance with commanding presence in any setting
Color Palette: Exceptionally colorful, with dramatic variation depending on right-hand placement and attack
Responsiveness: Highly sensitive to touch, offering both brilliance and warmth
Balance: Deep, blooming basses paired with clear, singing trebles that carry effortlessly
Versatility: Capable of delicate, lyrical playing and commanding projection on the concert stage
This guitar stands out for the way it blends refinement with strength. It responds to the lightest touch yet has an expansive dynamic range that makes it suitable for the most demanding repertoire.
The Coclea Thucea represents Andrea Tacchi’s defining vision as a luthier. It is a modern work of art rooted in tradition, executed with Italian elegance. This 2010 example is a rare opportunity to acquire one of his most coveted models in superb condition.
Tacchi guitars are highly sought after by performers and collectors worldwide, and this Coclea Thucea is a perfect example of why. It inspires, empowers, and captivates with every note.
