Jeff Sigurdson has been building fine handmade guitars in British Columbia since 1985, when he first built an instrument out of necessity because he could not afford to buy one. He completed a two year course at Douglas College in traditional Spanish guitar building, then studied with Michael Dunn, whose lineage traces to Casa Ferrer of Granada, established in 1875. From 1992 to 2000 he worked for Jean Larrivée Guitars, refining his structural precision. Today he builds one guitar at a time in his South Surrey workshop, with several hundred instruments completed over a forty year career.

Sigurdson builds both classical and flamenco guitars, drawing on Torres, Miguel Rodriguez Jr., and Daniel Friederich for his classical designs and on the Manuel Reyes tradition for his flamencos. His concert instruments today are best known as balsa core double tops, prized for rich, balanced tone and strong projection. Many feature thoughtful modern appointments: raised fingerboards, integrated armrests, and soundports with magnetic covers secure enough to leave in place while cased. His wood selection and symmetry are meticulous, from beautifully matched Indian rosewood backs to natural spalted wood rosettes.

We have been fortunate to handle some remarkable Sigurdsons. A 2025 cedar double top, No. 624, was built to our custom specifications at a 640mm scale, and its lush, blooming trebles and deep, woody basses reminded us of the finest German double tops while keeping a warmth all their own. An exceptional 8 string double top with Brazilian rosewood also passed through our hands, the finest extended range guitar we have tried.
