The Canadian luthier Douglass Scott builds on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and has quietly developed a reputation for guitars that strike a rare balance between traditional Spanish character and modern playability. He made his first instruments in 1998 from the books of Sloane and Cumpiano, then formalized his training at the Timeless Instruments school in 2002 and studied French polishing and hand-tool technique with master luthier Geza Burghart.

A trained classical guitarist himself, Scott approaches building from the perspective of a performer, something immediately apparent in the responsiveness and ergonomics of his instruments. Rather than lattice or double-top construction, he favors traditional seven-fan bracing that yields a warm, overtone-filled voice, then layers in modern refinements: raised fingerboards, soundports with magnetic covers, miniature tornavoces and seamlessly integrated armrests.

The result is an instrument that feels cooperative and effortless under the hands while still delivering real power and projection. His work is elegant and understated, prioritizing tonal performance and clean execution over ornamentation, and his growing waiting list reflects how quickly players have caught on.
