Tobias Berg, 2021

$15,000.00

Cedar / Indian Rosewood

Overview

This 2021 Tobias Berg (No. 133) is a superb example of one of today’s most thoughtful luthiers. Berg, originally from Sweden and now based in Germany, studied in Mittenwald, Canada, and the UK, and has developed a style deeply rooted in tradition yet undeniably his own. His philosophy emphasizes purity of sound and construction without synthetic materials, and this instrument embodies that ethos beautifully.

With a cedar top, Indian rosewood back and sides, and a traditional seven-fan bracing design, this guitar combines depth, sensitivity, and openness in its voice. Its doubled sides lend additional stability and tonal focus, while the French polish finish enhances its understated elegance.

Included with this guitar is one of the most unique extras I’ve seen: a handmade book documenting the construction process of this exact guitar (No. 133), from wood selection to French polishing. It also comes with Berg’s signed certificate and letter — a testament to his artistry and care.

Tone & Playability

The sound of this Berg is extraordinary:

  • Depth and resonance in the basses without losing clarity

  • Sensitivity to touch, allowing the player to shape dynamics and color with precision

  • Singing trebles with a wide palette of vibrato, responsive both to gentle phrasing and to more aggressive articulation

  • Balance and fundamental clarity, even as sympathetic overtones bloom around the notes

Despite being a traditional fan-braced cedar guitar, it has the openness and projection often associated with modern designs. Its ability to sustain, sing, and respond naturally makes it one of those rare guitars that feels immediately intuitive to play.

The neck is slim and C-shaped, with a low action that makes it extremely comfortable. This is one of those instruments where everything “just works” under the hands — the kind of guitar that invites long hours of inspired playing.

Aesthetics & Craftsmanship

Berg’s style is elegant and restrained, drawing on tradition while remaining distinctively his own:

  • Rosette: Subtle colors of deep red and gold, perfectly complementing the cedar top

  • Bindings & purflings: Simple yet refined, with red and light wood highlights

  • Headstock: Berg’s original, compact design with sharp lines, paired with tasteful tuners (black rollers, cream buttons, brass gears)

  • Finish: French polished throughout, giving a warm, natural luster

The overall impression is of a guitar that is quietly sophisticated, letting the sound — and the player — take center stage.

  • Excellent condition overall

  • Light nail marks on the top and behind the bridge

  • No cracks, no repairs, and only very minimal signs of play wear

  • Four years old, fully opened-up, and concert-ready
