Key Features

This is the 19th guitar built by American luthier Michael Fontenot, based in Fredericksburg, Texas. A retired pediatrician turned builder, Fontenot’s instruments reflect meticulous craftsmanship and a clear passion for the art. This example—his #19—marks a notable turning point in his output, showing refinement well beyond what you'd expect at this stage of a luthier’s career.

At the time of listing, Fontenot’s instruments remain extremely affordably priced for the quality—something likely to change as word spreads.

  • Top: Cedar doubletop with balsa core

  • Neck: C-shaped, slim profile

  • Other: Integrated dark wood armrest, wood ring rosette

Sound & Playability

Fontenot’s recent guitars feature a low main air resonance, which contributes to the rich, piano-like bloom of bass notes and an enveloping tonal presence. Despite its compact 640mm scale, this guitar exhibits strong projection, exceptional evenness, and a warm tonal palette throughout all registers. Sustain on the upper strings is excellent—especially impressive given that this example is strung entirely with nylon strings.

The guitar responds well to a light touch but has ample headroom for expressive phrasing. The armrest is seamlessly integrated and adds comfort during long playing sessions, while the raised fingerboard allows easier access to upper positions.

Evan notes this is a super playable, expressive, and colorful guitar that confidently holds its own next to much more expensive instruments.

Final Thoughts

This guitar is an ideal opportunity to own a high-quality, handmade doubletop by a talented and rapidly rising American builder. With prices currently well below market norms for this quality level, Fontenot’s instruments are a fantastic find.
