Key Features

This is an outstanding new doubletop by veteran American luthier John Dick, who has been building doubletops since the late 1990s, making him one of the earliest adopters of this now widespread design. His years of refinement show clearly in this instrument, which blends modern projection and sustain with a familiar, lyrical tonal character that makes it a joy to play.

I’ve known of John's work for over a decade—some of you may remember I mentioned a friend from my university days who owned one of his early guitars, which always left me impressed. It’s great to finally have one of his latest instruments in my shop, and to see firsthand how his guitars have continued to evolve.

  • Top: Cedar Doubletop with Nomex core

  • Neck: C-shaped, very slim, satin finish

  • Other: Matte-finished headstock and bridge, Hernández y Aguado inspired rosette and headstock design, tall and wide fret wire

Sound & Playability

The sound of this guitar truly competes with some of the finest doubletops I’ve encountered. The basses are earthshattering: deep, powerful, and with excellent sustain. The trebles, meanwhile, sing with incredible sustain and a regal, vocal-like presence. One of the things that really stands out is how clean and legato the first string feels- notes seem to bloom effortlessly, with very little of the harsh attack that can plague some modern guitars.

This is also one of the most comfortable, easy-playing doubletops I’ve come across, with a thin, satin-finished neck, wide frets, and a low action setup to my preference. The build quality reflects decades of experience, and it shows in every detail, from the graceful headstock design to the tasteful rosette that pays homage to great guitars of the past.

Final Thoughts

Simply put, John Dick’s guitars are one of the hidden gems in the world of doubletops: beautifully made, superbly playable, and tonally impressive across the board. This is a fantastic opportunity to own a concert-level doubletop from one of the true early pioneers of the design.
