Every so often a guitar walks into the room and simply takes it over, and this 2014 Daryl Perry (No. 197) is one of those instruments. It pairs a stunning bearclaw spruce top with Brazilian rosewood back and sides, and the figure in that rosewood really comes alive in the right light. This is a powerful, deeply musical concert guitar from one of Canada's most respected makers.
What sets this one apart is the sheer size of its voice. It is a big, generous sounding guitar with real presence and character, the kind of instrument that rewards a committed player and gives back more the harder you lean into it.
This is a huge sounding guitar. The basses are the headline: deep, growling, and frankly intoxicating, with an authority that fills the room. There is real muscle down low, but it stays defined rather than turning muddy.
The trebles sweeten beautifully as they open up, singing on top of that enormous bass foundation, and the first string in particular feels supercharged, with a projection and clarity that cuts cleanly. The result is a wide, dramatic dynamic range and a voice that keeps revealing more the deeper you go.
At a familiar 650 mm scale with a 52.5 mm nut, the guitar sits comfortably in the hands and invites you to dig in.
The bearclaw spruce top is full of character and catches the light gorgeously, and the Brazilian rosewood back and sides give the instrument both its visual depth and its warmth of tone. The neck is built with a traditional V-joint, a refined touch of old-world craftsmanship, and it is fitted with elegant Scheller tuning machines.
