Overview

The Altamira “Sor” model is a beautifully executed 19th century style guitar, handmade in the Hanson Workshop at Altamira Guitars. Inspired by the instruments of René François Lacôte, often called the “Stradivarius of the guitar,” this model pays homage to the guitars played by Fernando Sor, Carulli, Aguado, and Coste. Compact, refined, and incredibly enjoyable to play, it captures the intimacy and nuance of the Romantic era instruments while offering excellent build quality and playability for modern players.

Built at the end of 2024, this example features a solid spruce top, flamed maple back and sides, and a French polished finish. The shorter 630 mm scale length makes it remarkably comfortable, while the lightweight build and responsive setup make it a joy to explore both period repertoire and daily practice.

Sound and Playability

This model immediately stands out for its intimate and colorful sound palette. The shorter scale length reduces string tension, allowing the player to shape tone and phrasing with ease. The dynamic range is wide, the trebles are vibrant, and the instrument delivers an expressive warmth that feels authentic to early 19th century guitars.

With its low setup (just under 3.5 mm on the sixth string and just over 2.5 mm on the first), the playability is outstanding. The neck is thin and C shaped, ensuring comfort for players of all styles and hand sizes. Though designed for Romantic era repertoire, it is equally inspiring for modern pieces, improvisations, and practice.

Build and Design

Every detail of the Hanson Workshop Sor model reflects craftsmanship and historical awareness, from the traditional bridge pins to the understated headstock fitted with precise tuning machines. The flamed maple back and sides shimmer under the light and will darken over time to a rich coffee color, much like the antique instruments that inspired it. It is both elegant and deeply enjoyable to play.

The included Altamira case is lightweight yet protective, with ample padding and a slim, stylish design. It makes this guitar as portable as it is inspiring.

Final Thoughts

The Altamira “Sor” model from the Hanson Workshop offers an affordable and beautifully made introduction to the Romantic guitar world. It is light, charming, and full of character, perfect for exploring Sor and Giuliani yet flexible enough for any style of music. A wonderful addition for collectors, performers, and enthusiasts alike.
