Glenn Canin has long been recognized as one of America’s most respected double top luthiers, building concert instruments for top artists around the world. This 2024 example, his 194th guitar, represents the refinement and depth that define his work: an ideal balance of projection, warmth, and effortless playability.

The guitar features a cedar balsa double top with Canin’s signature five-fan bracing and subtle horizontal reinforcements for support and tonal complexity. The top is adorned with his elegant wheat motif rosette, complemented by green-tinted purflings and matching tie block details that add refined color to the design. The raised fingerboard, slightly more elevated than most German-style designs, allows for easy access to the upper register. The neck is exceptionally comfortable, C-shaped, and precisely intonated, with a remarkably low action and high fretwork. Small intonation corrections at both nut and saddle demonstrate Canin’s meticulous craftsmanship and sensitivity to player feel.

The back and sides are a stunning set of Brazilian rosewood, richly figured and full of visual depth. The headstock continues the wheat motif and features smooth Barnett tuners, along with a burled veneer plate on the rear for an extra touch of elegance.

This instrument embodies the qualities that have made Glenn Canin’s guitars so admired among concert artists. The basses are deep and resonant with a cello-like quality, while the trebles are luminous, colorful, and extraordinarily sensitive to touch. Each string maintains its own character yet blends perfectly with the others, creating a cohesive and balanced sound. The guitar responds instantly to dynamic changes, offering both intimacy and power. It can be pushed hard without losing clarity or sustain, which makes it one of those rare instruments that feels alive under the fingers and endlessly inspiring to play.
