Tobias Braun, 2026

$15,000.00

Spruce / Maple

Overview

This exceptional 2026 Tobias Braun represents the beginning of a special collaboration between the Austrian master luthier and GuitarCollection.com. Built specifically for our shop, the instrument reflects Braun’s deep connection to the Spanish tradition while showcasing materials and craftsmanship of remarkable beauty.

For this guitar, Braun selected a particularly striking set of flamed maple for the back and sides. The wood is visually stunning, with vivid, three-dimensional figure that shifts dramatically in the light. Paired with a beautifully aged European spruce top, the instrument has both visual elegance and tonal sophistication.

Sonically, this guitar has impressed everyone who has played or even briefly heard it in our shop. The balance across the registers is exceptional, with a seamless transition from the warm, supportive basses to clear, singing trebles. Nothing dominates, nothing disappears. Instead, the guitar presents a remarkably cohesive voice that feels natural and complete across the entire fingerboard.

Braun’s instruments are deeply informed by his apprenticeship and long relationship with the legendary José Luis Romanillos, and that lineage can be heard here. The guitar possesses the refined clarity, warmth, and responsiveness associated with the Romanillos tradition, while maintaining Braun’s own distinctive voice.

Construction & Design

The visual character of this guitar is striking without being excessive. The flamed maple back and sides provide an elegant contrast to the warm color of the spruce top, creating an instrument that feels both modern and timeless.

Braun is known for meticulous hand-voicing and extremely careful material selection. The result is an instrument that feels alive under the hands, with immediate response and a wide dynamic range.

The guitar is finished in traditional French polish, allowing the top to vibrate freely and contributing to the instrument’s openness and tonal complexity.

Sound & Playability

The defining characteristic of this particular Braun is its perfect balance. Each string speaks with clarity and presence, yet the overall sound remains unified and cohesive.

The basses are warm and supportive, providing a strong foundation without becoming overpowering. The trebles are lyrical and articulate, sustaining effortlessly while maintaining sweetness and depth. This equilibrium makes the guitar exceptionally versatile, equally comfortable in intimate lyrical repertoire or more powerful concert works.

Playability is superb, with Braun’s refined neck profile offering comfort and precision across the fingerboard. The guitar feels immediately responsive to both delicate touch and more assertive playing.

About the Luthier

Tobias Braun was born in Germany in 1960 and has spent most of his life in Austria near Vienna, where he continues to build guitars in his workshop in the Vienna Woods.

His path into guitar making began in 1983 when he built his first instrument. Shortly thereafter he studied under José Luis Romanillos, one of the most influential luthiers of the modern era. Braun attended multiple Romanillos courses across Europe and eventually served as Romanillos’ assistant during a guitar-making course in Córdoba.

In 1989 Braun earned his Master Craftsman’s Certificate in Vienna, and over the following decades he established himself as one of Europe’s most respected builders of traditional Spanish-inspired instruments.

His guitars are played by professional artists across Europe and Japan, and his work is admired for its balance, refinement, and faithful continuation of the Spanish classical guitar tradition.
