Key Features

This brand new 2025 guitar from California luthier Steve Porter is my first opportunity to feature his work here at GuitarCollection.com—and it’s safe to say, it’s made quite the impression. I’ve been familiar with Steve’s guitars for years, particularly through one of my students who played one consistently in lessons. Even over a webcam, it was hard to miss how refined, powerful, and responsive his instruments are. This latest example, built specifically for my shop, takes that reputation to the next level.

  • Top: Cedar, lattice braced with thin carbon reinforcement

  • Fingerboard: Raised design in the style of Tom Humphrey, top floats freely

  • Neck: Comfortable C to slight D-shape, low action

  • Tuners: Sloan, gold-plated with wheat motif carved headstock

  • Other: Two large Ruck-style soundports, Daniel Friedrich-inspired rosette and tie block, modern aesthetic touches

Sound & Playability

The most striking aspect of this guitar is, without question, the first string—it’s nothing short of miraculous. It has the kind of presence, warmth, and crystalline quality that you rarely encounter, coupled with an exceptional dynamic range that rewards both delicate phrasing and bold playing.

The entire instrument has a huge, bold sound with remarkable sustain and an abundance of overtones. It brings to mind some of my favorite guitars by Philip Woodfield, Michael O’Leary, and Jim Redgate, yet with a distinct voice that is all Steve Porter.

The basses are deep and resonant, with plenty of punch and warmth, while the trebles are full, rich, and endlessly expressive. It’s the kind of guitar that feels effortless under the hands, inspiring musical ideas from the first note.

Final Thoughts

This is a fascinating, beautifully crafted guitar that blends bold, modern design elements with an unmistakably musical voice. It offers concert-level projection, effortless playability, and exceptional refinement throughout. An ideal choice for serious players looking for a powerful yet lyrical instrument with impressive character.
