Simon Marty, 2022
Spruce / CSA Rosewood
Overview
Simon Marty is one of Australia’s most influential guitar makers, widely recognized for his innovative approach and scientific precision. Originally trained as an engineer, with a doctorate in electrical engineering and a background in physics and mathematics, Marty brought a uniquely analytical perspective to guitar building. His early research, supported by Australian Government grants, explored advanced techniques such as laser holography and finite-element analysis, ultimately leading to the development of his now-famous radial bracing system.
Over decades of refinement, Marty has created instruments that combine exceptional projection, balance, and tonal complexity. His guitars are played worldwide by leading artists including Irina Kulikova, Jeremy Jouve, José Antonio Escobar, and Slava Grigoryan.
This 2022 example is a particularly compelling representation of his work. It features a spruce top with his signature radial bracing, paired with striking Pau Ferro back and sides. A raised fingerboard, seamlessly integrated armrest, and his iconic rosette design reflect both his technical ingenuity and aesthetic sensibility. Altogether, it is a modern concert instrument that feels both highly evolved and deeply musical.

Sound & Playability
This guitar delivers the hallmark Marty experience of immense power and projection, but with a level of warmth and accessibility that sets it apart.
The basses are immediately striking, with a deep, resonant “growl” that remains present even under the lightest touch. Unlike many guitars that require effort to unlock their low-end character, this one offers that richness effortlessly, whether played delicately over the fingerboard or with more attack.
Despite this depth, the instrument never feels overly dark. As you move through the midrange and into the trebles, the sound opens up beautifully, revealing a clear, vibrant top end that balances the power below. The result is a voice that is both full and highly organized, with excellent separation between voices and a wide palette of tonal colors.
There is also a compelling sense of openness and mystery in the sound, particularly in the bass register. At moments it evokes the complex, old-world character of historic Spanish instruments, yet it is paired with the sustain, projection, and responsiveness of a modern concert guitar. Notes carry effortlessly, even in the upper positions, and chords bloom naturally with a rich, blended sustain.
Perhaps most notably, this guitar offers a wider-than-usual dynamic range for a Marty. It retains the precision and power for which his instruments are known, but responds more flexibly to different touches, making it both expressive and highly playable across a variety of repertoire.
In the hands, the guitar feels equally refined. The neck profile sits comfortably between a C and D shape, with a thin, fast feel and a well-executed setup. The raised fingerboard adds an extra level of ease and control in upper positions, while the overall balance of the instrument makes extended playing effortless.
Condition
This guitar is in 9.9/10 condition. It has been extremely well cared for and presents in near-mint state.
About the Luthier
Simon Marty has been building guitars since 1982, following an early fascination with the intersection of music and engineering. His work stands apart for its scientific rigor, most notably in the development of radial bracing, a design that departs from both traditional fan bracing and Australian lattice systems.
While his approach is highly technical, Marty’s instruments are ultimately guided by a deep appreciation for the beauty and expressive potential of the classical guitar. The result is a body of work that continues to evolve while remaining unmistakably his own.
