Simon Marty, 2022

Spruce / CSA Rosewood

Simon Marty is one of Australia’s most influential guitar makers, celebrated for his bold innovations and meticulous craftsmanship. He began building guitars in 1982 after becoming fascinated, as a player, with how physics and engineering could transform the instrument. In 1984 he received an Australian Government grant to apply advanced research methods such as laser holography and finite-element analysis to guitar design. With a doctorate in electrical engineering and academic foundations in physics and mathematics, Marty brought an unmatched level of scientific insight to lutherie.

Over the years he left his career as a research scientist to devote himself fully to building guitars, always guided by the Mediterranean warmth and aesthetic beauty that first drew him to the instrument. The result has been a steady evolution of instruments that are louder, more responsive, and better balanced, while retaining the soul of the classical guitar. His instruments are performed on worldwide by leading artists including Irina Kulikova, Jeremy Jouve, José Antonio Escobar, and Slava Grigoryan.

This 2022 example highlights his visionary work. It features a spruce top with his revolutionary radial bracing, paired with stunning Pau Ferro back and sides and completed with Pagos tuners. A raised fingerboard (not found on earlier Martys), an elegant armrest, and his unmistakable rosette further showcase his attention to both playability and design.

Tone and Playability

The sound is immense in volume, projection, and clarity, yet also colorful and forgiving. Some Marty guitars can be highly demanding of a flawless touch, but this one is unusually accessible and flexible, rewarding a wide range of approaches. It retains the hallmark depth and power that make Marty’s instruments so respected, but with an inviting and open character that makes it a joy to play.

The playability is equally superb. With its comfortable neck shape, well-set action, and raised fingerboard, this guitar feels effortless under the left hand and allows for exceptional control and comfort in demanding passages.

Condition

This guitar is in 9.9/10 condition. It has been extremely well cared for and presents in near-mint state.
