Santos Hernandez, 1934

$18,000.00

Spruce / Cypress

Few names in the history of Spanish guitar making hold as much weight as Santos Hernández. Working in Madrid through the early 20th century, Hernández carried forward the legacy of Torres and is widely considered one of the greatest luthiers of all time. His guitars were played and cherished by some of the most important figures in the guitar world, including Regino Sainz de la Maza, Emilio Pujol, and countless others. To this day, instruments bearing his name are among the most coveted pieces of Spanish guitar history.

A Flamenco Build with a Classical Voice

At first glance, this 1934 guitar might be labeled a flamenco instrument: a spruce top, cypress back and sides, and traditional peghead tuners. However, as is often the case with early 20th-century Spanish guitars, the line between flamenco and classical was not as sharply drawn as it is today. Cypress was a readily available and affordable wood, peg tuners were far less costly than machines, and many players simply used these instruments for both repertoires.

This example, has been recently set up and adjusted with a low yet versatile action that remains lively for flamenco but is also perfectly suitable for classical playing. Sonically, it carries the deep, authoritative basses and lyrical trebles that make Hernández guitars so beloved. As with all great Santos instruments, it projects with surprising power for its featherweight build (just 1,235 grams).

Condition and Playability

This guitar has clearly lived a long, musical life.

  • Multiple professionally repaired cracks on the top, back and sides

  • Peghead tuners remain intact and functional; planetary pegs could easily be fitted by the next owner if desired

  • Neck is rounded and very comfortable, slightly fuller in first position

  • Low, comfortable action with room for adjustment

Despite its wear, the guitar remains structurally stable and highly playable. It is exactly the kind of vintage Spanish instrument that speaks with a voice of authenticity, raw, lyrical, and steeped in history.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an authentic 1930s Santos, an instrument that blurs the line between flamenco and classical, and that still sings with the unmistakable soul of Madrid’s golden age of guitar making.
