Robert Ruck, 1981

Spruce / CSA Rosewood

This 1981 Robert Ruck is a powerful and inspiring concert guitar from one of the most influential American luthiers of the 20th century. Ruck’s instruments have been played by countless professionals, most famously Manuel Barrueco on his 1972 No. 58, an instrument that helped define his sound across performances and recordings worldwide.

Nine years later, this 1981 example shows Ruck at the height of his craft. It delivers a huge, piano-like voice, long sustain, and remarkable clarity, while remaining highly sensitive and playable at both loud and soft dynamics.

Tone & Playability

The first thing that stands out is the sheer power. Many players would assume this is a double-top if blindfolded. The basses are massive, with a low D that resonates like a piano string, while the trebles project with openness and balance. Unlike many spruce guitars that can skew bright, this Ruck achieves warmth and depth without losing clarity.

The sustain is extraordinary, with sympathetic overtones that create a “chorus” effect reminiscent of an organ. It is an instrument equally comfortable under heavy playing or subtle, quiet phrasing. Despite its larger 655mm scale, the setup is low and comfortable, making it easy to play.
