Kim Lissarrague, 2023
Cedar / Ziricote
This is the 398th guitar by Australian luthier Kim Lissarrague, and it is a breathtaking showcase of his artistry and engineering. Lissarrague is one of the most talked-about names in the modern guitar world, known for building instruments that rival Greg Smallman in power while offering their own distinctive character. Many of my professional colleagues rave about his guitars for their projection, sustain, and expressive palette, and after playing this one it is easy to see why.
From the very first notes, you are met with a huge, immediate sound that requires little effort from the right hand. The guitar practically sings on its own, rewarding both light touches and bold dynamic playing. Sustain is remarkable, with a natural swell to individual notes that makes long lines and lyrical repertoire feel effortless. While often celebrated for their volume, Lissarrague’s guitars also reveal a wide palette of tonal colors once you spend a bit of time adjusting your approach. Subtle variations in attack and hand position unlock shimmering ponticello brightness, deep tasto warmth, and everything in between.
Physically, this guitar is a substantial instrument. Like a Smallman, it is heavy in weight, but that translates to stability in the lap and to a sound that fills a hall with ease. The balance between comfort and projection is enhanced by thoughtful details such as the seamless armrest, thin C-shaped neck profile, and low, responsive action. Every aspect of playability has been carefully dialed in.

The Sound
This Lissarrague offers immediacy, power, and sustain that border on effortless. A note swells beautifully after the attack, creating a dynamic, almost breathing quality. Unlike the stereotype that these modern Australian guitars are only about raw volume, this instrument rewards nuanced right-hand work with a full spectrum of tone colors. From delicate whispers to full-bodied fortissimo, it provides absolute confidence under the fingers, one of those guitars you can trust to deliver every intention you put into it.
