Gregory Miller, 2024
Spruce / Indian Rosewood
This is my first time featuring an instrument by Portland-based luthier Gregory Miller, and it is easy to see why his guitars are admired among followers of the traditional American school of luthiery. A direct protégé of Jeffrey Elliott and Cindy Burton, Gregory carries forward their legacy with refined craftsmanship, elegant design, and the warmth and openness that characterize Elliott-inspired guitars.
This 2024 model (No. 79) features a spruce top with seven-fan bracing and Indian rosewood back and sides. It resonates with depth, clarity, and balance across all registers. The tone feels remarkably mature for such a young spruce guitar, offering a wide spectrum of color and responsiveness. The main body resonance sits between G and G-sharp, providing a powerful and grounded bass while maintaining clarity in the midrange and brightness in the trebles.

Impressions
This instrument radiates refinement in every detail, from the precisely beveled inner rosette edge and sculpted headstock purfling to the veneered Indian rosewood backplate. The craftsmanship reflects Gregory’s background in furniture and interior design, with clean lines and flawless joinery that enhance its traditional structure.
Tonally, this guitar is beautifully balanced and open. The basses have a deep, mature resonance, the mids are clear and woody, and the trebles shimmer with a chime-like sweetness and long sustain. It is sensitive, colorful, and highly responsive to touch, offering a sound that feels both grounded and alive.
About the Maker
Gregory Miller was born and raised in western Kansas and has been working with his hands since childhood. His early fascination with fine woodworking led him to study design and furniture making at Kansas State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Interior Architecture in 1988. After more than a decade practicing interior design in Portland, Oregon, he transitioned to building custom furniture full time, eventually discovering his passion for classical guitar making.
In 2003, after meeting Jeffrey Elliott and Cyndy Burton at the Northwest Handmade Musical Instrument Exhibit, Miller began studying directly with them and has maintained a close mentorship ever since. His guitars are known for their precision, balance, and clarity, with an aesthetic that reflects decades of experience in architecture and fine craftsmanship. He builds one instrument at a time from his home workshop in Portland, focusing on tonal consistency, refined design, and lasting musicality.
