Tone and Playability

This 2013 Eric Sahlin is an elegant and articulate concert guitar from one of the most respected American luthiers. Built in Spokane, Washington, this instrument is lightweight, highly resonant, and features a refined voice that has fully opened up over twelve years of careful play. Sahlin's waitlist spans several years, and for good reason. His guitars are known for their tonal clarity, playability, and attention to detail.

From the first chord, this guitar reveals its character. The basses are full and responsive, with a punchy and lively quality that supports lyrical phrasing. The trebles are bell-like and clear, with excellent sustain and color. It has all the warmth and balance you’d want in a traditional spruce fan-braced guitar, but with an unusually rich and open voice.

The neck is thin and comfortable, with a subtle ergonomic twist that helps ease the wrist into a natural position in first position. The action is low and easy, with room to adjust further if needed. The frets are medium to tall, and the setup is smooth and welcoming. Overall, it is a highly playable guitar with an expressive range that invites exploration.

Craftsmanship and Materials
  • Top: European spruce

  • Back and Sides: Indian rosewood

  • Bracing: 7-fan traditional

  • Neck: Mahogany with subtle ergonomic twist

  • Fingerboard: Ebony

  • Tuners: Graf

  • Rosette: Abalone center tiles with wheat motif borders

  • Headplate: Abalone inlay

  • Finish: French polish

  • Nut Width: 52mm

  • Scale Length: 650mm

Visually, the guitar is elegant and understated. The rosette combines abalone and subtle wheat patterns in a way that feels classic but refined. The abalone inlay also appears on the headstock, and the Graf tuners are smooth and precise. Despite being over a decade old, the condition is excellent. There are only minimal signs of careful use, with no major dings, no string rash, and no cracks or repairs.

Final Thoughts

This is a mature traditional guitar from one of the best American luthiers, offering an expressive, full-bodied voice and effortless playability. If you are looking for a guitar that pairs refinement with depth and comfort, this Sahlin would be an excellent choice. Rarely do his guitars appear on the market in this condition and at this price point.
