This is the very first Andy Danser guitar to enter GuitarCollection.com, and it makes a striking first impression. Number 74, built in 2026, it is a spruce double top with a balsa interior layer from an American luthier whose work has quietly become some of the most refined in the modern field. What stands out immediately is how thoroughly traditional it sounds. When friends and colleagues, several of them excellent players, first picked it up, they were surprised by the volume but did not guess it was a double top. That is about the highest compliment this kind of instrument can earn: all the warmth and character of a traditional Spanish guitar, with the added power, evenness, and clarity that a double top provides.

Construction & Design

The top is a spruce double top with a balsa interior layer, in the lineage of Antonius Müller, who pioneered the balsa double top approach. Underneath sits a five fan bracing pattern, a nod to Danser's grounding in traditional Spanish building. The guitar is entirely French polished, and the workmanship is exactly what you would expect from a maker who has spent years on historic instruments: the polish is flawless, one of the most mirror like French polishes we have seen, and the bindings and purflings are perfect.

The rosette is a beautiful all wood geometric design, its lighter central motif loosely inspired by the rosette of an antique Puerto Rican cuatro in Danser's collection, flanked by small triangular wedges that give it a striking three dimensional quality. The bridge is a simple rosewood design with a tasteful mother of pearl accent, and the purflings are clean, simple wood lines that match the rosette. The back and sides are Nicaraguan rosewood that genuinely glows, with an amber hue shot through with oranges, reds, and earthy tones, and lovely figuring across the sides. The headstock carries Danser's distinctive shape with a veneer of the same Nicaraguan rosewood, and the raised fingerboard includes an extra twentieth fret to reach that top C. Tuning is handled by Barnett machines with black rollers, among the smoothest and quietest available anywhere.

Sound

Two things stand out right away. The first is how balanced and beautifully this guitar fills up, deep and rich in a way that recalls a great Santos Hernández. The second is harder to put a finger on: the guitar always feels perfectly in tune. Beyond the compensation at the nut and saddle, there is something in the way the notes join each other and sustain, as if they are all on the same wavelength.

Drive the basses and the guitar answers with a natural, traditional voice. This is not the hair trigger responsiveness of the most lightweight, volume oriented double tops. Instead it comes from the school of the traditional maker, where there is a real reward for putting a little extra weight into the right hand: a great growl emerges on the sixth string and right down through the basses. That same growl is there with a fleshier stroke too, producing bass notes that are reverberant, warm, and sultry.

The trebles are a highlight. Notes have very long sustain and an unusually steady trajectory, growing for several seconds before they begin to decay rather than spiking and dropping away. The result is a rich, singing top end. The first string carries a lovely mellowness when plucked gently, yet it is not afraid to show a more aggressive side when driven, a character reminiscent of an old Spanish guitar. The third string is a real standout, which is rare, with a silky, sweet character, and the overall picture is remarkably open, with overtones blossoming quickly for an instrument this new. Pull everything together and the guitar is cohesive and balanced, a mixture of sultry smoothness and focused clarity. The basses are powerful enough that, heard on their own, you might guess this was a cedar top, and yet the voice brightens readily whenever you ask it to. The dynamic range invites real sensitivity, letting phrases taper to a whisper.

Playability

This guitar is very easy to play. The neck is a medium sized, C shaped profile that sits comfortably under the hand, with nicely tall, beautifully level frets. The 51 mm nut width, a millimeter narrower than the typical fingerboard, makes bar chords just a little easier. The action is set to a standard 4 mm on the sixth string and 3 mm on the first at the twelfth fret, though the ease of the setup makes it feel lower than that in the hand.

About the Luthier

Andy Danser is an American luthier based in his hometown of Durham, North Carolina, where he has run Danser Guitar Works since 2006. His path to the bench ran through a lifetime in music, from playing in bands in the fertile Chapel Hill scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s to a family steeped in craft: his father a woodworker and stained glass artist, his mother a writer and metalsmith, and his identical twin brother a fellow luthier and furniture maker who spent years building at Collings Guitars.

Danser built his first guitar under Sergei de Jonge in 2001, then pursued the craft with unusual seriousness. He apprenticed with Ivan Schmuckler at the Leeds Instrument Making School in Northampton, Massachusetts, near the celebrated Bill Cumpiano, before moving to England to study classical guitar making under Roy Courtnall at Newark and Sherwood College, with further study alongside Tony Johnson, James Lister, Malachi Brady, and the master maker Gary Southwell. He then spent two years in New York learning fretted instrument repair and restoration under Robert M. Jones in Brooklyn, where an early assignment, restoring a 1956 Robert Bouchet, proved a revelation and helped set his standard for what a great guitar can be.

Over the years Danser has owned and studied instruments by many of the masters, among them Francisco Simplicio, Enrique García, Marcelo Barbero, Miguel Rodríguez, José Ramírez, Manuel de la Chica, Hermann Hauser Sr., John Gilbert, Robert Ruck, and Thomas Humphrey, an education that continues to inform his work. Since turning to full time building he has focused on the modern double top, seeking a guitar with real reserves of power, headroom, and volume that never come at the expense of tonal complexity, sustain, and warmth. He favors a finely machined balsa core between veneers of spruce or cedar precisely because it yields a more natural, woody sound than the synthetic materials often used in this style of construction, and structural integrity, so his instruments can be enjoyed for generations, is central to how he works. This guitar is a clear expression of that philosophy.
