Overview

This 2026 concert model by Daniel Stark is a remarkable statement of what a short scale classical guitar can achieve. Built in Stark’s German workshop and sent directly to GuitarCollection.com, this 630mm double top is among the most powerful and resonant instruments of its size that I have ever played. Any lingering myth that shorter scale guitars lack authority disappears within seconds of putting this one in your hands.

Despite the reduced scale length, the projection, depth, and complexity of tone are extraordinary. It is immediately responsive, alive with sympathetic vibration, and effortlessly musical. This is Daniel Stark’s full concert model, not to be confused with his Espanola series, and it represents a very different level of refinement, materials, and voicing.

Construction & Design

The cedar soundboard is a double top featuring an unconventional and highly effective balsa lattice core, a design Daniel Stark has been refining for years. Internally, the structure is unlike anything I have seen before, visually striking and acoustically explosive. The result is an instrument that vibrates freely and transfers energy with remarkable efficiency.

Visually, this guitar is just as compelling. The Torres inspired rosette is one of my favorites among modern makers, with deep, understated blues and intricate geometric detail that reward close inspection. The bridge is exceptionally low profile and razor thin, maximizing energy transfer into the soundboard. The tie block echoes the rosette motif and the bridge is finished in a subtle matte sheen that complements the overall aesthetic.

The Amazon rosewood back and sides are beautifully figured, highlighted by a striking sapwood center strip. An armrest and soundport are seamlessly integrated, with a magnetic port cover included for players who prefer a slightly more controlled overtone response.

Playability & Ergonomics

At 630mm scale length, this guitar offers exceptional comfort without compromise. The shorter scale reduces left hand strain and allows the right hand to play with less effort, yet the instrument never feels small or constrained. Even with larger hands, the adjustment is quick and intuitive.

A raised fingerboard provides easy access to the upper register, and the slightly narrower nut spacing makes extended reaches more manageable. The neck profile is sleek and inviting, and the overall setup encourages long, fatigue free playing sessions.

Sound & Character

This guitar is an overtone engine. The trebles are clear, singing, and complex, while the basses are deep, open, and cello like in character. Sympathetic resonance across the strings is abundant, sometimes so much so that muting becomes part of the experience. With the soundport open, the guitar feels almost orchestral. Closing the port subtly reins in the overtones for a more focused presentation, giving the player flexibility depending on repertoire and preference.

What stands out most is how easy it is to make music on this instrument. It rewards nuance, responds instantly, and feels deeply inspiring in the hands.
