Ashley Sanders, 2025

Cedar / Ziricote

Few countries have produced as many world-class luthiers as Australia, and Ashley Sanders has firmly joined that lineage. Based in Port Elliot, South Australia, Sanders builds lattice-braced concert instruments that combine the power and sustain typical of the Australian school with a natural and organic tonal character. His background as a cabinet maker shows in every detail, with elegant proportions, subtle visual design, and a focus on sound and playability over ornamentation.

Overview

This 2025 model, Sanders’s 76th guitar, features a cedar top with beautiful medullary rays and stunning Ziricote back and sides under a thin nitrocellulose finish. The result is a durable surface that preserves the acoustic sensitivity of French polish while offering greater resistance to wear. The guitar’s understated rosette of earthy greens and browns, wide bindings, and clean craftsmanship give it a confident, refined aesthetic that matches its sonic authority.

The lattice bracing, with maple veneer reinforcements rather than carbon fiber, delivers a vibrant, natural, sustaining voice with exceptional balance across the registers. The basses linger endlessly, supporting melodies with rich resonance, while the trebles remain warm, full, and even throughout the range. The result is a powerful yet deeply musical instrument that combines projection and character in equal measure.

Sound and Playability

This guitar embodies the best traits of modern Australian design: lightning-fast response, massive sustain, and rich tonal depth. The basses ring with orchestral resonance, while the midrange stays clear without becoming nasal or harsh. The trebles are lush and round, creating a balanced palette that feels natural under the fingers. Despite its low action, the setup is buzz-free and extremely comfortable, offering impressive control and responsiveness.

Condition

The guitar is in excellent condition with only a few light surface marks near the lower bout, light scuffs on the head of the guitar and minimal string impressions behind the bridge (no string dings). Difficult to see in the photos, as its only in the finish of the guitar. There are no cracks, repairs, or structural issues of any kind.
