Yan Lei is one of the most promising younger builders in China, working from his workshop in Tianjin. He began his craft in 2012, and recognition came quickly: in 2018 he took fourth prize at the Antonio Marin Montero International Guitar Making Competition in Granada, Spain, one of the most closely watched events in the guitar making world. He builds in deliberately small numbers, and each instrument leaves his bench individually numbered, a reflection of how personally he approaches every guitar.

Lei works across four distinct construction styles. His Torres inspired instruments are warm and sweet, especially in the high registers, while his Hauser models offer a balanced, comprehensive timbre with precise controllability. His double tops bring the power and clear projection needed for large halls, and his flamenco guitars are set up with lower action for speed, giving bright, crisp tones and rapid attack. Across all four, the common threads are light weight, careful voicing, and finish work that stands comparison with far more established names.

Our first encounter with Yan Lei's work was a 2025 spruce double top over Indian rosewood, his 69th build, and it impressed us immediately. The guitar is featherlight in the hands yet responds to the softest touch, with surprising depth in the basses, sparkling clarity in the trebles, and even, overtone rich chords across all voices. It competes easily with double tops at far higher levels of reputation, and the raised fingerboard and comfortable neck make it effortless to play.
