Max Cuker

Max Cuker is a professional guitarist and luthier working in Vilnius, Lithuania. He built his first guitar at eighteen under the guidance of luthier Yuri Zirin, and after years devoted to performance he returned to the bench in 2011, refining his craft through independent study and close examination of instruments by makers such as Masaru Kohno, Jose Ramirez, Manuel Contreras, Dieter Hopf, and John Price. In 2014 one of his guitars took first prize at the Guitar Virtuosos luthiers competition in Saint Petersburg, and his instruments are now played around the world, from Vietnam to New York City.

Cuker's signature idea is what he calls a natural double top. Instead of sandwiching balsa or Nomex between two skins, he routes a chevron pattern of channels directly into the solid top, then encloses it with a second layer of wood, leaving no synthetic material inside the soundboard at all. The approach preserves the warmth and natural voice of a traditional concert guitar while adding the power and quick response of a modern double top. His instruments carry a strong visual identity as well: asymmetrical headstocks, seamlessly integrated armrests, side soundports with magnetic covers, and raised fingerboards with tasteful sapwood accents.

Both Cukers we have hosted rank among the most naturally voiced modern double tops we have played. His 2025 spruce model paired quick response with a warm, articulate balance, and the 2026 cedar over satinwood proved one of the most impressive double tops to come through the shop, rich in overtones, remarkably even in sustain, and genuinely hard to put down.
