Dimitris Piperidis

Dimitris Piperidis was born in Athens in 1973 and grew up in a family of woodworkers, absorbing the craft in childhood while studying music as a teenager. The two paths merged naturally in instrument building. He apprenticed with Pavlos Gypas, widely regarded as Greece's greatest luthier, and later worked alongside him as a colleague, then continued his development under the Parisian master Dominique Field, who remains his mentor to this day. Since 2010 he has run his own workshop in Athens, building traditional classical guitars that have found their way to players around the world.

Piperidis builds on a classic fan braced foundation in the tradition he inherited from Field, with hallmarks such as small peones linings along the sides. His mentors' influence is visible in the construction, but the sound and feel are entirely his own: warm, open, and inviting, exceptionally even across the registers, with responsive dynamics and a lyrical, colorful character that is rare in a brand new instrument. Gypas has described him as ahead of his time, always seeking perfection in both sound and aesthetics, and the fit and finish of his instruments bear that judgment out.

We first encountered his work in 2019 at the Guitar Art Festival in Serbia and were immediately impressed. Years later we commissioned our first Piperidis, a 2025 spruce and Indian rosewood guitar built to our playing specifications, with a thin C shaped neck and low, fluid action. The voice was warm, clear, and balanced from the first hour of playing, with rich resonant basses, singing flexible trebles, and excellent sustain into the upper positions.
